Screening of 'Shooting the Mafia', Letizia Battaglia and Kim Longinotto
https://artpil.com/letizia-battaglia/ (Barbican Centre)
Kim Longinotto's new film exploring the photography of Letizia Battaglia was gripping and poetic; although I was aware of the entrenched violence created by the mafia in the south of Italy, I was unaware of the extremity of such corruption and exploitation of Italian citizens. Longinotto' use of archives to explore Battaglia's work works well with the type of 'perspective' documentary that the director adopts.

'Human Mask', Pierre Hughe (19 min film)

I recently experienced Pierre Hughe's short film, 'Human Mask' (2019) which features clips taken of Fukushima in 2014 with the 'actor' being a monkey employed by a restaurant; there is something very thrills and progressive in the artists use of cinematography to create this work.

Federico Estol, 'Shine Heroes'

In previous projects I have explored the development of facial recognition software in London in particular to trace certain individuals across the city; during my research I found quite humorous methods on the internet to find ways to prevent facial surveillance individually, including using LED lights to appear as one shining head in the dark. Estol's project 'shine Heroes' reminded me of these satirical methods found online, along with several practitioners like Zach Blas that have explored undiscovered facial recognition prevention.

I find Agusta Yr' work intriguing through its dream-like qualities of the face and its exploration of fictional and nonfictional imagery; the video art director creates new types of 'fluid-like' sculptures, created sometimes from the content of past fashion show videos. During part 1 of the foundation course I explored new ways of capturing 3D objects on my iPhone to digitally 'stitch' together memory images in order to create new physical qualities of material. Yr use of composition to 'cut out' these models from a catwalk, adding a black background establishes a new relationship the artist has with the content, largely seeing the object from a different perspective.

****I am particularly interested in Siedentopf's recent project, 'Tate Modern - Please Respect Our Neighbours Privacy', in response to the Tate recently going to court concerning the opposite housing block arguing the viewing tower was an exploitation of their privacy. Siedentopf used the sign located on the side of one of the supporting columns to create an ironic interactive piece of artwork, encouraging the public to use binoculars to 'spy' on the neighbours.
